The Difference Between a Sexuality Counselor and a Sexuality Therapist

The Difference Between a Sexuality Counselor and a Sexuality Therapist

A sexuality counselor focuses on addressing sexual problems through assessment, education, and specific suggestions that are relevant to their client’s concerns.  They do not delve into intensive psychological counseling.  This is a short-term treatment option.  Sexuality counselors can be anyone from medical professionals (MDs, PTs, NPs) to school counselors to clergymen.  Long and short; your sessions will involve individualized education and specific recommendations or your counselor can help you prepare for more intensive therapy (referral to licensed mental health counselor; i.e., sex therapist), if needed.

A sex therapist is a licensed mental health professional who receives special training in addressing sexual issues through intensive psychological and cognitive therapy.  Sex therapists can be social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, etc. Their scope of practice prevents them from touching clients during treatment.  This is more of a long-term solution.
